Philips Hue Kitchen Lighting Ideas
The kitchen is the heart of the home and one area where many people will spend time when at home be it in the morning for breakfast, evening dinner with the children or entertaining friends. Lighting can set the mood or be used to help you when in the kitchen, be it a bright light for preparing, or a nightlight for getting a glass of water in the evening.
Using Philips Hue in the kitchen is a great way to add some fun lighting as well as it being very practical too.
Philips Hue for the Kitchen
You can easily switch your bulbs in your current lights for Hue bulbs, this is simple and suddenly gives you the power of Hue in your kitchen. I there is one item for the kitchen that is perfect it is the light strips. Running lights along the floor plinth under the units, or along the top are great ways to light up this area and can look really stylish too.
Using Lightstrips in the Kitchen
Hue Lightstrips just need to be plugged in, however running them to your desired location may require a little bit of drilling of your units to thread the cable through depending on where the mains socket is, and where the strip is going.
Extending the lightstrip makes it ideal for lots runs around your kitchen, with the additional 1m sections you can extend a single run up to 10m long. Light strips are a great way to add light along kitchen cabinets, under worktops and breakfast bars, as well as ceiling lighting too where you have them running along the top of your units. This indirect lighting can create a great effect and really set the mood in your kitchen.
Using a run of light strips above and below wall hung kitchen cabinets is a great way to add mood lighting to a kitchen and is a popular choice with Hue users and great way to use the light strips.
This user has two separate light strips that have been extended, one installed along the top of the kitchen cabinets and one underneath, the top acts as mood lighting while the one below can be used as task lighting too.
Installed down one side of the kitchen you can see the light effect it creates.
The light strip installed under the cabinets is installed in a metal diffuser strip which helps to protect the lightstrip from stream and water, as well as helping to diffuse the light. The metal ligtstrip case is screwed to the underside of the units with a frosted plastic strip that holds and hides the ligthstrip in place giving a seamless and clean look.
3 lengths of diffuser casing was used and cut to length for the final section to allow a good fit.
The photo below is a closer image of the diffuser used, when off the LED strip cannot be seen.
With the lights on you can see the full effect in the evening when it is dark.
This Philips Hue light strip kitchen installation uses two power controllers which are plugged into the mains where one cupboard as a plug socket used for the builtin extractor. The cable is then run down the side of the cupboard to the top and bottom light strip.
Watch the video below to see the lower ligthstrip cycle through different colors.

Running light strips around the edges of worktops and under wall hung units can create a stunning effect that can be warming or changed to suit the mood in your home. A great way to give a nice glow in an area that may look boring otherwise.

Pendant and Hanging Lighting
While Hue have a range of different bulbs you can use to replace your existing bulbs, they also have a range of different light fittings and lamps that are perfect for the kitchen. From pendant lights and hanging lights that are ideal for being installed over your kitchen table, to individual pendants that can be installed over a work top area or breakfast bar.
The Ascend Pendant Smart Light is great for use in the Kitchen, add 2-3 along a breakfast bar or open work top space and use it as task lighting or change the color to set the mood in the evening. Ideal for full bright white light when cooking and then changing later in the evening or when eating.
For a pendant above the dining table the Philips Hue White Ambiance Cher is a beautiful light that has a real design style to it. The light height can be adjusted and you can set the light to different white temperates and brightness. This light is white ambience only, so no color choices can be made.
If you have spotlights in your ceiling you can replace these with Hue GU10 bulbs in color or white and change the mood of your cooking space. From bright white when cooking and as task lighting, to dimming it down in the evening or changing its color to set the mood when dining.
The GU10 bulbs can be brought as a white only option or color, both can be straight swapped with your traditional GU10 bulb you may already have installed.
