How to use Philips Hue with Smart Smoke Alarms

Published

As a smart bulb Hue lighting can work with other smart home devices, and that includes smoke detectors. It might seem odd how these two devices can work together but actually it is a very useful feature and one that you hope you never have to see in action.

Smart smoke alarms such as nest for example can link with your Philips Hue lights.  If your smoke alarm is activated in the case of a fire then your lights can turn on, can be set to flash, or turn on bright red.

If there is a fire in the night having all your lights turn on help wake you up and allows you to see when getting up and getting out. Having them set as a red color also makes you aware there maybe a fire.

Flashing them or changing them to red is also a clever way to help people who maybe hard of hearing and therefore flashing red bulbs will help them become aware of a possible fire within their home.

Philips Hue Smoke Detectors

We have rounded up a selection of smart smoke alarms that are compatible and will work with Hue bulbs.

Nest Protect – Support Discontinued

The nest smoke alarms work with Hue, they can be set to change color, or flash. By connecting your Hue and nest accounts it allows the two to talk to each other, so if there is smoke then your Nest can send an alert to your Hue bulbs triggering them to turn on for example.

Update – Philips Hue is dropping its Works with Nest functionality from November 17th 2020. In a notice shown in the Philips Hue app, the company warns that “integration with Nest Thermostat, Nest Cam and Nest Protect will be discontinued” from this date. However, the notice adds that “this will only be temporary” since much of the functionality is expected to be replaced in the Google Home App as Google transitions to the Works with Hey Google platform.

“Google is transitioning its ‘Works with Nest’ programme to the ‘Works with Hey Google’ programme. Related to this, Philips Hue integration with Nest Thermostat, Nest Cam and Nest Protect will be discontinued from November 17, 2020.

This will only be temporary, as Google is building existing Works with Nest features into the Google Home app. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

    Netatmo Smoke Alarm

Netatmo already have a range of smart products from security cameras to weather stations, and no a smoke alarm. Again this works in a similar way, it will turn your Hue lights to turn red if smoke is detected creating a visual alert and also useful at night.

With the Netatmo Smart Smoke Alarm and its real-time smartphone notifications, you can always take action, even if you are not home.

At the moment this isn’t available in the US but will be coming soon.
