LED Lights Health Benefits

There are a range of smart bulbs on the market and like most Philips Hue bulbs can bring a range of health benefits to yourself and your family when used in your home.

1. Smart lighting for better sleep

There has been lots of mention of not looking at your phone in bed, watching TV, or using an iPad, this is because of the blue light emitted, blue light from these devices keeps you awake and can meet you your nights sleep taking you longer to nod off.

Let me take you through a little bit of sleep science. The brain is an important part of the sleep process. In order for us to be able to fall asleep, the brain must take a break from its activities and relax. Before that happens, your body will stat to produce melatonin which is your sleep hormone, it helps to prepare the body to go into sleep mode and hence you start to nod off.

Blue light from tech gadgets keeps you awake and prevents melatonin from being produced. However there is a light that helps you get abetter nights sleep, and helps you nod off, and that is red light. According to sleep psychologist Michael Breus, PhD, author of the new book The Power of When, “The theory is that red light aids melatonin production”.

There are many health benefits associated with getting quality sleep. These include healthy weight, improved memory, less stress and depression as well as better focus and attention. Using the Phillips Hue bulb enables you to enjoy all these health benefits.

So tip one, when going to bed be it yourself or your kids, set your lights to a soothing red color. Use a timer and have them come on when its the kids bedtime, and fade out when they fall asleep.

2. Perfect Lighting for Improved Mood

Many health conditions exist that are associated with low mood. They include but not limited to bipolar disorder, anxiety as well as depression.

What can help with low mood? You will be surprised that one answer is the lighting conditions in a room where someone is.

It has been scientifically proven that the type of lighting present in a room can make or break a person’s mood. Excessive brightness can cause anxiety as too much dimness can trigger fear. A well-balanced illumination, on the other hand, can improve somebody’s mood.

3. Reduces the Occurrence of Headaches

The good news is that the Philips Hue bulb never produces a flickering light! It never flickers, and thus can help ease migraines as well as headaches. The Philips Hue bulb is thus a great choice for people with frequent migraines or headaches. If it does flicker then it is likely to be damaged or faulty.

4. Eye-Healthy Illumination

Some bulbs produce excessive light that can easily damage the eye. Too much light can affect the part of the eye known as retina in a very short period of time. It can cause either temporary or permanent damage to this part of the eye such that you have a very poor vision at night. The damage could also result in having teary eyes whenever you are in a room with lights turned on.

5. Balances the Circadian Rhythm

Have you ever noticed that your body feels energized and alert as well as exhausted and drowsy around the same times every day? It is because of what we call the Circadian rhythm. This can be defined as the body’s internal clock system, which runs in the background of your brain and cycles between alertness and sleepiness at regular intervals. Some people call it your sleep/wake cycle.

It is no secret that some bulbs generate lights that disrupt the Circadian rhythm, especially during its night cycle. They produce lights that are too bright, which sometimes fool it to believe that it is daytime.

In response, it readjusts your body to energized and alert. That explains why you do have trouble sleeping where there is too much light.

Set your bulbs to turn on in the morning to a bright white light, this will help wake you up and help you feel energised in the morning. You can use the sunrise feature from the Hue app if you have Philips Hue bulbs set up in your home.
