Most Common Philips Hue Problems & How to Easily Fix Them

Published

Philips Hue bulbs have been voted among the best lights that provide your home with natural and beautiful blending lighting altogether.

Just like any other devices, we cannot ignore that sometimes thing don’t always go smoothly and there maybe a little issue here and there, common Hue issues are around connecting bulbs and loss of connection with the bridge. These issues are quite common and are easy to fix too.

Philips Hue Problems & Troubleshooting Issues

We have rounded up some of the common issues people face when using different types of Hue bulbs and how to resolve these problems.

Most Common Philips Hue Problems, and How to Fix Them

Note that it is essential that you first make sure all bulbs are turned on at the main switch and that power is going to the bulbs.

Philips Hue Bridge Lights Meaning

It is also worth checking the Hue bridge to make sure the lights are on and not flashing. All lights should be a constant blue.

hue bridge lights mean

1. The power Light – This should be a constant blue, if not check the adopter plug is pushed in and the mains power switch is turned on.

2. Network Light – This should be a constant blue, this shows you are connected to the home network allowing you and it to talk to the bulbs.

3. Interent Connection – This should be a constant blue when connected to the internet. This allows you to access your bulbs remotely. If you don’t need to be connected to use it at home.

4. Sync Button – You will push this large button to allow apps to access your bridge. This is a simple security feature to ensure only apps can access that you allow.

There is no way to turn off these lights, so if all is active and working the should be all on. If you wish to hide the lights so you cannot see them as they are perhaps distracting depending on the location of your bridge, then they could be covered with wire tape to block the light.

The Hue bridge cannot find all my lights

This can happen when setting up if you bulbs are out of range of the hub or perhaps depending on where the bridge is positioned. You can either move the bulb closer to the hub to set up and then position where you originally want it, or you can enter the serial code for the bulb as below.

The Fix

  • Then open the Philip hue app and select “settings options.”
  • After that, click on “add serial number” option on the app. Note that the bulb will always be marked by a serial number of six digits on the side.
  • After that, key in the serial numbers of the bulb.
  • Then click “ok” to connect the lights to the bridge.

Resetting Hue bulbs

You can use a Hue dimmer without a bridge to reset bulbs. Reset the dimmer with the setup button in the back (hold 15 seconds), then reset bulbs by holding the dimmer close and holding down the ON and OFF buttons simultaneously until bulb flashes. Repeat this method to reset your bulbs. Once reset you can then connect them to your new bridge.

Hue Philips lights are unreachable

Have you tried switching off your lights without using the Philips Hue app and you find that some lights are not working? Well, this could be due to a problem with the settings.

Therefore in such a case, you need to use Philip’s app to turn off the lights which are quite comfortable and possible. You can use two methods which are; Switching on all the lights at once and then switching off after a few seconds. Or by the use of the hue app.

The Fix

  • Go to the app and click on the “settings” section.
  • Then select the lighting set up option.
  • Look for the lights that you are unable to control and thus click on the “info option.”
  • Delete the bulb and add it again to the Hue Bridge.

Unable to connect to bridge

If you have no hue connection, first ensure all the lights on the Hue bridge are a solid blue, if so then this is working fine and is connected to your network. You should ensure that your phone or tablet that has the Hue app on is connected to the same network that the Hue bridge is on.

If you have multiple wireless networks such as a 2.4ghz network and a 5.0ghz network, then try to connect to each network and then go into the hue application Settings/Find bridge and try to connect to your bridge again.

Philips Hue bridge has no internet connection

Check that the ethernet cable is securely connected to the bridge and your router. Make sure your router is connected and that there is an active internet connection.

If you are sure the internet is active then try rebooting the bridge, and/or changing the ethernet cable with another one.

Do note that your bridge does not require an internet connection, your hue lights and app will all work fine without this. The only Philips hue features that require internet are using hue away from home using geofencing.

Internet Light flashing on my Hue Bridge

The internet connection light on the bridge (Number 3 in the image above) will flash when trying to connect. The bridge does not need to be connected to work with your home lights, so when flashing, your lights should still work. If the light is flashing it may have lost connection is is trying to reconnect, this can happen from time to time. If it does not stop flashing then ensure your router is connected to the internet.

Hue Bridge stopped working

Sometimes the hue bridge may automatically stop to work due to various causes like the settings and so on. Also, the problem may occur in the case where the lights have stopped communicating with the bridge hence causing a blackout.

Try out the first process of reviving its function which includes the use of the Hue Bridge as we saw earlier. If that fails, you can use the other method which requires you to factory reset the device. Note that this includes deleting all the settings on the device and creating new and fresh settings.

How to Completely reset Hue Bridge – The Fix

  • Get your Philip Hue Bridge, and at the back, you will find small gap marked as “restore factory setting.”
  • Get something that can fit on that mark and gently press it for about five seconds. Make sure that the Philip Hue Bridge is still on when conducting these processes.
  • Then release the button and check your bridge if it functions well by connecting all your lights with the bridge again.

Hue bulbs are Flickering and/or buzzing

This is a common problem found on different bulbs, and it can also occur on the Philips hue too. The causes may be due to a damaged bulb, also ensure that the bulb is using a traditional light switch and not a in the wall dimmer switch.

Using the Hue dimmer is fine, however you will face an issue using a traditional wall dimmer and this could be the causes of the buzzing and flickering.

For more information and causes read our guide on why my hue lights flash here.

Amazon Alexa and Philips hue not connecting

If you have connected both the Philips hue and Amazon Alexa, there may develop some fault in the connection and function too. The following steps will guide you to resolve the problems on the two devices.

The Fix

  • Restart both the Philips hue bridge and the echo.
  • Disable the Philips hue skill and later reactivate it with the use of Alexa app.
  • Then go to the Alexa app settings and select “forgot.” This enables you to disconnect your bridge from the echo.
  • Wait for some few seconds and connect them again. (Note that the connection between the bridge and the Amazon echo is only possible if there is a wifi connection and it should be from the same router. )

If you ever experience any of the above issues with your Philip hue bulbs, follow the listed solutions to solve the problems.

Hello, I installed 10 hue light strip plus throughout my kitchen, and had to shorten one of the strips. Now that strips yellow LED is permanently on and can not be controlled by the Hue App and/or the bridge, is this defective product, or simply in need of a reset of the strips connector to the bridge? I have 6 other strips to shorten but am concerned that they will have the same problem. thanks in advance. MG

My daughter has a strip that was shortened (and cut in the correct zone)

Did anyone find a resolution for this problem? I have a lantern in the kitchen with light strips around, they are powered by the mains, are picked up by the bridge and the app, however will not change colour like the other strips lights other on my center isle and upper level units. Alexa voice command doesn’t work with the lantern strip and I can only turn them off by the switch.

is my strip damaged? do I need a new strip or is there a fix to this?

Hi, just installed 4 Phillips Hue BR30 Flood bulbs and they are strobing. I have a standard dimmer switch. Is there a fix or will these smart bulbs not work where I have installed them?

    Reply
    • mark

You need a dimmer designed for the very low current draw of LEDs. Look on the dimmer label for LED and CFL. Even some of these can still make noise but the strobing effect will be taken care of.

First of all Hue “help” is an abysmal failure. I have tried with my smart phone and my laptop to fill in the “help” form. I do everything the page asks. When I’m finished with entry, there is no “SEND” button. There is only a large purple Philips rectangle where one would expect to find a “SEND” button.

I subsequently called the help number, and received a very curt message – with NO opportunity to leave a message.

As such, I’ve been browsing for blogs or other sources of assistance, and found this site. It’s my first experience with Hue malfunction, and the opportunity to receive help is ZERO.

I have two Asus AC3100 routers in AIMesh mode. I have multiple Alexa devices (Amazon & Sonos). I have about 48 lights. I have one bridge connected to one router. Some lights don’t always respond, especially the ones furthest away from the bridge. I have to give the same commands multiple times. Sometimes the lights will respond, sometimes not. It is highly frustrating. I do own multiple bridges but the Hue app does not support it. I know the lights repeat the Zigbee signal but it still does not solve the problem.

There is also a significant delay when using Alexa vs Google home. Google is almost instant but Alexa is delayed, sometimes the lights switch one one after the other. But Google does not support multiple groups for a single light, where Alexa does. I need multiple groups for a single light because some rooms are very large with 22 lights, which I need to control as a group or subgroups.

We need the apps to support multiple bridges for the same lights in a multi-router setup.

I deleted light #2 and now I can’t add it back. I initially tried setting up two bulbs to one light fixture that typically has two bulbs. I noticed the Hue app was only controlling one the bulbs. Since I set it up as a hallway, I deleted the other light thinking I could use it for a different room. Now I can’t add it back. Tried searching for it with and without the serial number but the app doesn’t see it. What else can I try?

Just installed a lightstrip +1 and the latest bridge so I can swith the under cabinet lights on and off via voice commands. Despite Alexa being linked and saying ok when I attempt to switch the lights on or off nothing happens.

I’ve added the hue skill and redone the advice here a few times but nothing seems to allow me to switch the thing on or off vocally.

I created a “goodnight” routine in Amazon echo to turn off 11 lights, 2 Wemo switches, and dim 2 more lights. Many times, only a few of the lights actually turn off and I have to repeat the command. I have a similar routine called “relax” that will dim these same bulbs. Many times, only some will dim to the desired state. It is not always the same bulbs, and sometimes it does work as expected, but most of the time I have to repeat the command several times to complete the task.

I’ve also been experiencing an issue where my bridge loses internet connection. I have to unplug it and reconnect.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix these issues?

If I have the bulbs connected to the dimmer they work fine with it, but Alexa won’t find them on a scan anymore. If I let Alexa reset them they then get found by the scan, but are now not connected with the dimmer switch anymore. If I reconnect them to the dimmer ist starts all over again …

I’m not exactly sure when it started but now it takes about 10 minutes for the lights to turn on. Which doesn’t really help me very much when it’s dark and sometimes even I get home put my daughter to sleep and then the lights go on.

Can’t ‘link hue to alexa.’ Once you’ve gone thru the ‘set up’ of the lights and are stuck on the ‘linking,’ press the big button on the hub and say ‘alexa find devices.’ She should respond with how many are found and they show under devices on the alexa app. they should now work with alexa and can be renamed. Use the Hue app to change color, etc.

I bought two 4-pack hue White A19 bulbs from Best Buy to connect to the Philips Hue bridge and colored lights starter pack I received for Christmas. I’ve spent the last 3 hours trying to get them to connect to the bridge. So far, after 3 hours, only two of the eight bulbs I’ve set up have been successful. The other six can’t seem to be found, even when two of the lights in questions are literally sitting RIGHT NEXT to the bridge. No matter what I do, after 20 minutes, I get a message in the Philips Hue app that no new bulbs are found. (The bridge is hardwired into my router.)

I also bought another “starter pack” with another Google mini and a Philips Hue bulb. It’s not found either. I was so excited for Philips Hue, but I guess I’ll be taking everything back for a refund, and then try to find something that actually works. For the $$$ spent, this is ridiculous.

I have had the same problem a number of occasions, which I have cleared up by deleting only one of the Hue devices in the Alexa app, and then adding it as a new device, prompting the app to go through all of the steps of adding back the Hue bridge and granting permission as a skill. Seems that network changes or other network issues cause Alexa to forget the connection to the Hue bridge, even if the devices are still listed in the app as unresponsive.

Obviously Hue has very poor intergration with both Alexa and Google. I have both in my home and sometimes they both become unable to connect with the Hue lights. The Hue bridge is working and the Hue app will control the lights. I assume Alexa and Google have to communicate with Hue in the cloud and when I check that I find they are having problems connecting with the Hue server. This is an ongoing problem for Hue to solve but I frankly don’t think they care as long as they can sell their system otherwise they would at least explain the problem.

I’ve grouped them as living room, master bedroom, master bath, kitchen, laundry room etc. I was able to tell Alexa to turn the individual rooms on with no problem until this last week. She tells me to check the hub connection which I have. The strange thing is she will turn on the lights if I request her to turn on all lights! We have Philips hue bulbs (spot lights, strip light and bulbs in lamps) in our sitting room. They are connected to a hue bridge (version 2) and and Amazon Alexa. Occasionally one of the spot lights does not turn on first time via the Alexa voice command, but when you repeat the command it often corrects it. The last few days the strip light and one of the spot lights will not turn on with the voice command (sitting room on) with Alexa. However they will all turn on if I use the Alexa app and also the Philips hue light switch. I can also turn on the two lights with independent voice commands. Why have they stopped turning on with the group voice command? It is driving me a bit crazy!

I am having the issue where my HUE is connected – all lights blue and the app being used to control the HUE is the Philips Hue app for IOS 13.5.1. The app on the phone shows complete connectivity and says that I am controlling the lights. (On, Off, etc) however the app is not physically turning the lights on or off even though it is reporting that it is.

    Troubleshooting I have attempted:
Ensure Wi-Fi is connected to Hue Bridge
Ensure Hue Bridge is connected to all lights
Ensure Hue Bridge is connected to the internet
    Ensure IOS up to date.
Ensure HUE App up to date
Reset Hue by removing power source
    Reconnecting app to HUE Bridge.

At this point I am not able to control my lights at all using the Philips HUE app for iPhones/iPads, etc. This was working this morning at 6:30am and now at 3:15pm it does not work at all.

Hey – wondering if anyone is able to help here …

I’ve got a v4 Lightstrip and 4 x hue white bulbs throughout the house.
Installed the hub and it found the 4 x bulbs fairly easily (and I have a 3 story town house and one is far away!).
However, the lightstrip can not be found. It’s in the adjacent room to the hub and I’ve searched multiple times, tried putting in the serial number and searching, tried moving it so it is 30cm (yes, 30 centimetres!) away from the hub and nothing …

The lightstrip was working OK through Bluetooth but, that’s now stopped working too so I’m a bit stuck with what to do now …

Any guidance would be gratefully received!

I managed to connect everything to my Alexa device and it works fine for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes my Hue Bridge 2.0 disconnects completely and cannot be reached via any apps or meethue.com unless I press the button again.

I have to press the button on the bridge every 5 minutes. Is that normal? It’s very annoying.

My Hue bridge is connected with all lights on; however, my Hue app shows “Unable to connect”! I have unplugged and started over and pushed the round center button to try to connect the bridge to the app but no luck. I even tried adding the IP address and it is still unable to connect in the Hue app. Is there a solution to get the app to show the bridge is connected.

My Hue bridge is connected and all lights are a constant blue. My Hue app, however, shows “Unable to connect.” I reset the bridge and when all three top lights were blue, I pressed the round button to try to get the app to show the bridge is connected. That did not work. I then tried to get the app to find the bridge with no luck. I even added the IP address in the search also with no luck. How can I get the app to recognize the bridge is connected and working?

I have seen this comment before but have not seen a fix yet. My lights randomly come on and turn blue. How can I resolve this issue?

Anyone here who knows if it’s possible to have an automation for power off only for a smart plug?

How can I connect to the hue bridge without pushing the security button to connect my devices. I would like to login to the hue bridge via the IP address and at least have command line access preferably a gui or web interface to configure the hue bridge via the local network that way I can connect devices without pressing that stupid button every time I unwed to connect a new device. Then I can use the app after I get the new device authenticated. But physically having to push the button is a real pain for me since I am in a wheelchair.

There has to be a way to connect device apps without pushing the security button on the device. PLEASE HELP!

After about 4 years with this thing, the hub seems to have died. It started out with all 3 lights on, but can’t be found with the app. tried moving it to a different switch on my network and even replaced the ethernet cable. Still can’t be found. tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app on my phone. Same thing. Tried factory reset and it now only has one light. Everything else in the house works great. Not sure, but is it possible that the hub is just dead?

I have lost my connection to my Philips Bridge. I have disconnected my Alexa App. I have also disabled a home automation app called Homeseer, but the Phillips Hue App will not find the hub. I can see it connected to my router by its IP address, but the App cannot find it. I have reset the hub to factory settings…nothing. It has all blue lights solid.

Additionally, Homeseer can find the hub, but without the hub, I can no longer control the lights with the cool Phillip’s scenes.
